Together we will transform our collective capacity to navigate complex legal systems and support safe, thriving, and engaged immigrant communities.
Who We Are
Co-Counsel NYC is a nonprofit legal services organization that partners with community-based organizations, law firms, and companies to respond to the emerging, complex, and ever-changing legal needs of immigrant communities.
With a focus on proceedings before USCIS and EOIR, we provide training, supervision, co-counseling, and community education on immigration and family law matters.
With decades in the field, we leverage our deep expertise to help advocates handle cases with competence, confidence, and compassion, and to expand access to pro se, pro bono, and direct legal assistance for newly arrived and long-time immigrant residents of the United States.
Experience
Co-Counsel NYC has extensive experience providing and expanding access to direct legal services for NYC’s immigrant communities, successfully building new programs and coalitions. Collectively, our attorneys have handled thousands of cases involving humanitarian forms of immigration relief and have robust appellate experience. We have prioritized historically marginalized groups, including those detained by ICE and at imminent risk of deportation. We have trained thousands of attorneys, paralegals, and community members on immigration and family law.
Approach
Rooted in principles of community lawyering, Co-Counsel NYC is committed to a collaborative and community-centered approach. We work alongside our partners to design and implement strategies responsive to the legal needs of immigrant communities.
We listen to and work together with immigrant communities, and are able to develop flexible and nuanced strategies in response to legal needs.
Services
Co-Counsel NYC offers substantive training, supervision, and co-counseling to lawyers who are interested in litigating immigration cases before USCIS and/or the Immigration Courts but have limited expertise in such high-stakes cases.
We are available to partner on all aspects of a case, including application preparation, evidence development, brief writing, trial preparation and litigation, appellate litigation, and more.
We develop, implement, and supervise pro se clinics to complete applications for asylum, work authorization, temporary protected status, and other forms of immigration relief.
We educate and supervise advocates at community-based organizations, companies, and law firms, and are deeply committed to providing education to directly impacted communities.
