Ambien Mitchell is a mama and community builder whose assortment of professional roles have included actor, server, educator, urban park ranger, and immigration advocate. Prior to joining the team at Co-Counsel, Ambien accrued years of proven success in immigration advocacy and over a decade of service in teacher recruitment with New York City Public Schools. As the Pro Se Plus Project Coordinator, Ambien facilitated partners’ collaboration to meet goals, improve services, and support thousands of immigrant New Yorkers through legal services and community education. Ambien coordinated Envision Freedom Fund’s Post-Release program, providing resources and referrals for immigrants freed from ICE detention as they navigated complex legal, social service, and financial challenges. And as the Accompaniment Program Coordinator at New Sanctuary Coalition, as requests for accompaniment more than doubled, Ambien rapidly scaled the program, training and coordinating thousands of new volunteers in partnership with organizations and institutions across the city. Creative and agile in her approach to community capacity building and care, Ambien remains deeply involved in deportation defense outside of work. With a guiding principle of freedom of movement as a human right, Ambien finds joy and healing in the fluidity and freedom of movement we can access within our own bodies, our identities, our relationships, and across our beautiful planet. Outside of work, she chases a toddler around, facilitates group shakes, and prepares herbal remedies.
