This month, our Resilient Communities Project (RCP) held its first community gathering in collaboration with project partners Wanllan Mi Wanlle and South Brooklyn Sanctuary in Flatbush, Brooklyn. RCP is supporting 33 asylum applicants fighting deportation. About one third of project participants are from Ecuador, followed closely by Venezuela and Guinea.
Following the kick-off gathering, teams began meeting with their Co-Counsel legal supervisor and together they developed a plan of action. Work on legal cases has begun in earnest, with asylum trials coming up as soon as the end of June.
Our gathering had two goals: to break bread together and to educate all team members (both volunteers and asylum applicants) on asylum law. Asylum Law 101 was taught in English, Spanish, and Fulani simultaneously!
A special thanks to our board member, Alma, for pitching in to provide child care.
